Instructions

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, sugar, corn syrup, and salt.
3.
Stir constantly until the mixture reaches 300°F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer.
4.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
5.
Pour the toffee onto the prepared baking sheet and spread evenly.
6.
If using, sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee and let melt for a minute, then spread evenly.
7.
Top with chopped nuts if desired.
8.
Allow to cool completely, then break into pieces.
