Ingredients

• All-purpose flour - 1 ¾ cups
• Unsweetened cocoa powder - ¾ cup
• Baking soda - 1 ½ teaspoons
• Baking powder - 1 teaspoon
• Salt - 1 teaspoon
• Unsalted butter, softened - ½ cup
• Granulated sugar - 1 ½ cups
• Eggs - 2 large
• Vanilla extract - 1 teaspoon
• Buttermilk - 1 cup
• Boiling water - 1 cup
• Chocolate frosting - as needed

Instructions

   Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.

   In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

   In a separate large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

   Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in vanilla extract.

   Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients, and mix until just combined.

   Stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth (batter will be thin).

   Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.

   Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

   Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.

    Frost the cooled cake layers with chocolate frosting as desired.
